Bookkeeping accounts determine how revenue, expenses, and VAT are recorded when information is transferred from Moment to your accounting system.
You can manage bookkeeping accounts under Setup → Accounting → Bookkeeping Accounts.

Each account consists of:
- An account number.
- An account type, such as Sales or Purchases.
- A VAT rate and VAT code.
- A description that identifies the purpose of the account.

The bookkeeping accounts available in Moment depend on your accounting setup and country-specific accounting requirements.
When creating invoices, expenses, travel claims, or other financial transactions, Moment uses the selected bookkeeping accounts to ensure that amounts are posted correctly in your accounting system.
Some accounts are created automatically when certain modules are enabled. For example, activating Travel & Expenses automatically creates bookkeeping accounts for travel costs and other expense categories.
To modify an existing account, click Edit. To create a new account, click Create Account.
You can configure default accounts under Setup → Accounting → Default Accounts.

Default accounts determine which bookkeeping accounts Moment uses automatically when creating invoice lines and transferring financial data to your accounting system.
Moment allows you to define separate default accounts for domestic customers and foreign customers. This makes it possible to handle VAT and accounting requirements differently depending on where the customer is located.
The Default bookkeeping accounts for domestic customers are used when invoicing customers in your own country.
You can select default accounts for:
- Fees – Used for fee-based invoice lines.
- Hours – Used for billable hours and time registrations.
- Expenses – Used when reinvoicing expenses to a customer.
- Products – Used for products and services added to invoices.
- Administrative fees – Used for administration or handling fees.
- Deductions for other invoice recipients – Used when invoice deductions are required.
- Account – A general default account when applicable.
In most setups, domestic accounts are configured with VAT-enabled bookkeeping accounts.
The Default bookkeeping accounts for foreign customers work in the same way but are used when invoicing customers located outside your own country.
Since foreign sales often have different VAT rules, these accounts are typically linked to bookkeeping accounts with reduced or zero VAT rates. This ensures that revenue and expenses are recorded correctly according to applicable tax regulations.
